The head of the Pointer should be balanced. The skull is of medium breadth and in proportion to the length of foreface. The skull is measured from the tip of the occiput to the centre of the eye and this should measure the same as from the centre of the eye to the nostrils.
The occiput should be pronounced and can be both seen and felt as a definite bump raised above the level of the skull at the point where the skull joins the neck. The stop is between the eyes and there is a furrow here. The brows are raised, forming the stop.
The nostrils are wide, soft and moist so as to allow the dog to scent game. The muzzle is slightly concave so as to give the slightly dished faced appearance which the standard demands. This is achieved by the tip of the nose being slightly higher than the stop. There should be a slight depression under the eyes. The cheek bones should not be prominent. The standard demands a well-developed soft lip which should be nicely rounded and fine in texture.
The eyes should be bright and kindly and not looking down the nose or be set around the side of the skull. The teeth should be in a scissor bite.
Ears are to be set higher on the head than eyeline, lying close to the head. They are fine in texture, of medium size and should be pointed at the tips.
The head comes from a clean neck which should be long and muscular, springing cleanly from a well-laid shoulder. There should be a slight arch at the back of the skull near to the occiput and this arch continues to the shoulders.
